How we craft inclusive policies
Our Policies and Procedures Review Committee regularly reassesses Library policies with an equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) lens. The Committee’s role is to promote a diverse and inclusive environment through Library policies and to provide equitable access to our collections, technology and spaces.
The Library’s service charter outlines our commitment to students and our goal to provide services that are welcoming to everyone.
Our commitment to continuous improvement
Humber participates in regular accessibility audits through LEAP, a College Libraries Ontario initiative supported by the Ontario Colleges Library Service. LEAP is a self-audit tool library teams at participating institutions use to evaluate the accessibility of library e-resources. Completed evaluations are entered into a repository that library teams can review to help make acquisition decisions, support library users and advocate for e-resource publishers to continually improve their accessibility features.
Accessible Content ePortal (ACE)
The Library is a part of the Accessible Content ePortal (ACE), which contains alternative formats of the print book collections of participating Ontario colleges and universities. Content is made available to students with print disabilities in these formats: Colour PDF, B&W PDF, DAISY, TXT and ePub.
ACE is managed by Scholars Portal, a service of the Ontario Council of University Libraries.
Closed captioning and transcripts
In accordance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), the Library’s DVDs and streaming video collections are either closed captioned or accompanied by transcripts when closed captioning is unavailable.
Barrier-free borrowing policies
We are committed to providing barrier-free access to the Library. That’s why we’ve eliminated overdue fines for most items and extended loan periods for our general collection, including books, ESL materials, children's books, leisure reads, plays, sheet music, DVDs, CDs and vinyl records. All fines collected are donated to Humber to support student bursaries.
Book Request and Delivery Service (BRADS)
Can’t visit the Library in person? We’ll ship Library books to your doorstep through our Book Request and Delivery Service (BRADS).
Current students, faculty and staff can request delivery of print materials (excluding textbooks) to anywhere in Ontario, free of charge. This service is funded by the Library to support studying and teaching needs for those unable to visit campus for any reason.
